Where Jack Herer actually comes from

Jack Herer was launched by Sensi Seeds in 1994 at a ceremony in the Cannabis Castle, with the activist it is named for present. Jack Herer wrote The Emperor Wears No Clothes and is credited more than anyone with putting industrial and medicinal cannabis back into public argument. Sensi’s founder has called it his favourite strain.

The exact recipe is treated as a trade secret, but the accepted reconstruction is a three way hybrid of Haze, Northern Lights #5 and Skunk #1, working out to roughly half Haze. What Sensi does publish is more useful to a buyer: there are four main phenotypes, three of them heavily sativa influenced and one distinctly indica in its growth, fast and compact with thick bud structure. That is a strain sold as a seed line with four outcomes, not a single clone.

The credential that separates it from other 1990s Cup winners is regulatory. Jack Herer became one of the few cannabis strains approved into the official Dutch medicinal programme and sold through pharmacies there, which is a different kind of validation from a Cannabis Cup.

Jack Herer asks more of a grower than anything else in this comparison set. The long flower alone rules it out of a lot of commercial rooms, and growers have reported outlier phenotypes running 16 weeks or more and being culled as impractical indoors.

It is not forgiving with nutrients. Experienced growers report spending seasons dialling in feed and still fine tuning, with pH and EC needing to be accurate rather than approximate.
The buds get heavy enough that growers routinely stake them, including lower bud sites.

Jack Herer and Durban Poison are both terpinolene led, which is why users often say they smell alike. The secondary terpenes separate them: Durban Poison runs myrcene and ocimene and reads sweeter and brighter, while Jack Herer runs caryophyllene and pinene and reads peppery and piney. Green Crack shares the daytime reputation but has no terpinolene at all, so despite similar reported effects it is chemically a different animal. On growing, Durban Poison finishes three to five weeks sooner than Jack Herer and is rated easy, which is the single most practical difference between them.

Expect 15 to 24% THC, with 18 to 22% the common band on menus.
Look for oversized pepper shaped bright neon green buds with golden undertones, thick orange hairs and a glazed trichome coat that extends onto the leaves and stems. Sensi describes well grown flower as being composed more of resin glands than plant tissue.
The nose divides people. Some describe lemon pine and savoury hash, others find it harsh and herbal. It is not a dessert strain and does not try to be.
Because the original is a seed line with four phenotypes rather than a clone, two legitimate Jack Herers can be materially different plants. Databases log more than twenty distinct strains carrying the name and hundreds of descendants.
